Gradient - enhanced strain softening material models

چکیده
Classical continuum models exhibit strong mesh dependency during strain softening. For such materials, the phenomenon may be regularized via the gradient-enhanced nonlocal formulation. The paper discusses the implicit gradient framework and demonstrates that standard nonlocal enhancement may serve only as a partial localization limiter. The over-nonlocal approach, where the weight for the nonlocal value is greater than unity, is able to fully regularize the problem.

Size-Dependent Forced Vibration Analysis of Three Nonlocal Strain Gradient Beam Models with Surface Effects Subjected to Moving Harmonic Loads
The forced vibration behaviors are examined for nonlocal strain gradient nanobeams with surface effects subjected to a moving harmonic load travelling with a constant velocity in terms of three beam models namely, the Euler-Bernoulli, Timoshenko and modified Timoshenko beam models. The modification for nonlocal strain gradient Timoshenko nanobeams is exerted to the constitutive equations by exc...
متن کاملObjective modeling of strain localization
ABSTRACT. This paper provides an elementary introduction into modeling of localized inelastic processes such as cracking or formation of shear bands. The basic concepts are explained using a simple one-dimensional example. It is shown that a stress-strain law with softening used in a standard continuum description leads to physically meaningless results and that the numerical solution suffers b...
متن کاملSoftening Gradient Plasticity: Analytical Study of Localization under Nonuniform Stress
Localization of plastic strain induced by softening can be objectively described by a regularized plasticity model that postulates a dependence of the current yield stress on a nonlocal softening variable defined by a differential (gradient) expression. This paper presents analytical solutions of the one-dimensional localization problem under certain special nonuniform stress distributions. The...
متن کاملShear band spacing in gradient-dependent thermoviscoplastic materials
We study thermomechanical deformations of a viscoplastic body deformed in simple shear. The strain gradients are taken as independent kinematic variables and the corresponding higher order stresses are included in the balance laws, and the equation for the yield surface. Three different functional relationships, the power law, and those proposed by Wright and Batra, and Johnson and Cook are use...
متن کاملEmbedded strong discontinuity finite elements for fractured geomaterials with variable friction
The strong discontinuity approach to modelling strain localization, combined with an enhanced strain element, has been used for more than a decade to model strain localization in materials including geomaterials. Most implementations of enhanced strain elements in the post-localization regime use very simple constitutive formulations along the discontinuity, such as linear softening or a consta...
